The term "dual language" refers to a program or system in which students are taught and receive instruction in two languages, usually their native tongue and another language. This approach is often used as an educational tool for children who are learning English while also preserving their cultural heritage through the use of their first language. Dual-language programs can take many forms, including immersion where students spend a portion or all of their school day receiving instruction in both languages, or two-way bilingual education where students from different linguistic backgrounds are taught together to promote biliteracy and cross-cultural understanding.
